Final Thoughts - 5 Years Later - Missouri in 1868
Try to think about what will happen in the next 5 years to these characters. The setting for the novel is Missouri in 1863 with the Civil War ripping apart the state. Fast forward to Missouri in 1868 and the Civil War is over.
Please let us what you think will happen to the major characters in the book and what will they be doing in 1868?
Matt?
Jesse?
Susie?
Clayton?
Matt's Mom?

matt will head back down and finds someone destroyed his farm and he then joins Jesse band of robbers.
i think that matt and susie will be married when they are older and have seven children, just like susie told matt in the tree when she read his palm.
I think Matt has to lie in order to protect his famly from the Jayhawkers.
I think Matt and Susie will be together, and if not already happily married, will be soon. They will probably go back South. I'm sure Clayton will go to college just like he always wanted, and might be already working successfully. I think Matt's mom will find she is happier with her children in the North and will stay there caring for her parents. Jesse's fate was revealed in the end of the book, and so maybe he has already gone bad. (I can't remember.) I may be totally off base, but I guess I'll find out in Pat's new books! I can't wait for them!

I really like your book, most of the time history books are boring but your book is really interesting. I like a lot of different parts in your book. The sad part is you won't have another book to finish the story of Matt and Jesse.
I think Matt will stay up in Pennsylvania with the rest of his family. Jesse will turn to a life of crime because most guerillas did. Susie will follow Jesse around for the rest of her life. Clayton will attend college up in Pennsylvania. And Matt's Ma will stay with her family but will continue to clean and cook.
I think that most young people lie and decive because they might think it is ok to lie because it will get them what they want.
What I think about Matt lying and decieving many many people is that maybe he shouldn't have lied, but in that situation it was the best solution he could think of. Also we have no idea what could have been going through his head because none of us were alive during a civil war so we don't know if it was the best choice to lie or not.
I don't think Matt sould lie because what seems like a little lie could turn into a big lie. Take an example from the book when he and his mom get in a fight because they are not completly truthful with eachother.
I think that Matt deceived and lied for the right reasons and I think that it was the right thing to do. It was a good thing to do because it helped Jesse and others stay safe and protect himself
When Matt lied I thought that he lied for a good reason because it allowed Jesse to stay alive and himself to stay alive as well.
I think that Matt will end up marrying Susie after the war. Matt's Mom will probably stay with her parents. Clayton will probably go to college. Jesse will probably be killed sometime for the crimes he has committed.
I think that Jesse, will go off to war and be successful. That Clayton will attend a big college. That Susie and her mom will be released, and will then send a letter to Matt. I think that Matt will Get the letter and come for Susie, they will get married and move to Matt's old farm.
What I think will happen to Matt is that he will get his horse back from Jesse, but Jesse might not want to give salt back to Matt because Jesse might have been in the Guerrillas to long.
What I think will happen to Jesse is that he will get changed from being with the Gurrillas to long, that he won't remember who Matt is.
I personally think that Matt is a good kid, but to make kids like him he puts on a "shell" of lying to impress them. I am not saying he is a show off or anything but he should just be himself!!
I think the when Matt noticed July was gone, he shouldn't have went to Jesse's house. The description of Jesse and his back was very in depth. The book overall was one of the best I have read.
I agree with a lot of people... I think that Matt will end up marying Susie and move to the old farm and build it up!
I think that Matt and Susie will end up getting married and move into a small farm home that Matt will put together. I have saw a lot of people put this and I think that it would happen!! It would just be weird if it didn't happen.
I think that Matt will end up coming back to Missouri. But I think he'll be the only one out of his family to be coming back. But i think when Matt gets back he'll have to rebuild his house because Guerrillas destroyed it. I also think that Matt and Susie will get married. I think Matt will lose contact with Jesse because Jesse will be with the Guerrillas and won't come back very often.
I think they will live happily in the north, but afterward Matt will come back and farm happily for the rest of his life. He will also marry Susie.
I think Matt will rescue Susie and they will get married, Jesse will be dead but a legend for his work with the bushwhackers, Clayton will be in college, and the rest of Matt's family will be happy staying in Pennsylvania.

I think that Matt will go back south after the war is over and marry Susie. The rest of is family will still be in Pennsylvania.

Hi all -
I've been away at the ALAN Workshop at the NCTE - that's National Council of Teachers of English - in Nashville, came home late Tuesday and then got ready for Thanksgiving with my family, so I haven't had a chance to blog till today (Saturday).
I have REALLY enjoyed reading all your predictions on this thread! Some of them are right on target, and all have been thoroughly enjoyable.
Just wanted to comment on a couple of things specifically:
1. To anon who said "most of the guerrillas turned to a life of crime" -- that's really not the case. Most of the guerrillas returned home after the war and returned to their farming and the law-abiding lives they had before they were pushed, forced, or otherwise drawn into guerrilla warfare.
2. To anon who said "the sad part is you won't have another book to finish the story of Matt and Jesse" ... hmm. Do you know something I don't know? I DO intend to continue, and certainly do hope to publish, more of their story, as I've said a few times on the blog!

I think Matt will go back to his home and find it destroyed by a fire. And I think that the only thing that will be left is his Dad's grave.
I think Jesse will come back but Matt decides to stay north. then Jesse gets upset that Matt isn't coming back so he becomes a criminal.
I think Jesse will come back and be furious because his father dies and Matt refuses to come back south because the north is "Paradise" so Jesse becomes a criminal.
I think Matt will go back and then find susie and get married but then susie dies and Matt joins Jesse's people. Then up North Matt's family lost touch with Matt and started to get worried. So they all went back down too. Then they found Matt again and it turned out he was with Jesse robbing people. Then Matt's family talked Matt out of robbing and ...
I believe that Matt will come back to his farm and his farm will be burned and dead. Then Matt will join the robbers and become part of their group.
