Final Thoughts - Pat Asks You
Pat has one more question for you in relation to the characters in the book.
For a kid you seems so respectful and good, Matt lies and decives a lot. What do you think about that?

I think he is just being a kid. All kids have their problems and Mat's problem just happens to be lying.

I think that Matt only lies so that he will have everyone's approval and he doesn't want to start anything with people becuase of their political beliefs on the war.
I think that while Matt might lie, it might be in order to keep his reputation. There's a lot of pressure on him to help out with his family since his dad is gone and Clayton can't help very much since he doesn't good legs. I think Matt is still a respectful and good kid, but he feels like he can't always tell the full truth if he wants to keep his good reputation with his family and friends.

To have Matt be lying and deciving all of the time I think that it is not right because you think lying might get you out of trouble but really all it does is get you into more, bigger trouble. If you get caught in a lie it is never good. Also, if you get caught lying then it doesnt make you look good and puts a bad reputation on you.
I think Matt lied a lot to protect people. He lied to the people closest to him because he didn't want them to be hurt. An example of this is when he lies to Mrs. Stone about Mr. Stone's death. This lie protected her from graphic information she didn't need/ want to know. But sometimes his lies were for selfish reasons, for instance when he bought the candy he lied because he was guilty for using the money and didn't want his mom to find out. No matter, I believe Matt was still a good and respectful kid, even though he lied sometimes.
I dont understand why, when Buck first came into the story, when Jesse, and Matt were fishing, why Buck had to scare Jesse and Matt. He could have hurt one of them, and I dont understand why he had to almost drown them.
I think that everybody lies. Even though he "seems" good and respectful, he's not perfect. Sometime in his life, he's going to lie. Like the saying goes...You can't judge a book by its cover.
I think that the reason Matt lies so much is because he is protecting his family from things that could go horribly wrong.
I think Matt is at heart, a good and respectful kid. In times of war, where giving the wrong answer to someone could cost you your life, Matt is being forced to lie more often. This in my opinion, is leading him to say more white lies and being in general, more deceitful.

To me i think that Matt is a good kid. Just at times though people can be a little stubborn. Unfortunatly Matt is always stubborn. He can at times just want his own way and if he dosen't get it he tries everyway on his own to get it. That is what i think of Matt.
I think the reason why Matt lies so much is because he tries to protect his family.
I think the reason why Matt lies and decives a lot is bacuse he dosen't want people to see his real feelings are and that his friends don't think that he's a loser.
To me i think that Matt is a good kid. At times he can be stubborn though. When he wants his way he gets it or dies trying.
I Think Matt has a reason for all his deceiving and lying. When Matt lied to his mother it was to protect someone or help them. I think Ma would have done the same thing if she was in Matt’s place.
I think that Matt lies for the simple reason of keeping a good reputation for so long is hard. He was bound to break sometime. I also noticed that even though he lies he always gets found out. So maybe he might just be better off not lying at all.
I think that sometimes it is okay for matt ti lie but sometimes he needs to tell the truth. Plau it makes the book better so that the readers can learn to not lie all the time and not make some of the mistakes that matt makes.
I think that sometimes it is okay for matt to lie but sometimes he needs to tell the truth.
Matt really needs to stop the lying. It's okay sometimes but not all the time. But with Matt it makes the book more intersting to read because then you don't know what kind of trouble it will get him into. Or if another event can lead to this lie. Also his lying could teach a good lesson to us about lying to much.
I think that we know he isn't flawlessly religious like Jesse, so he can't be expected to be perfect. In addition, with the war in their midst, he can't be perfect!

I think that Matt was lying for a good reason. Everyone lies one day or another, even the most nicest and most hard-working people. I personally believe that white lies are fine. They aren't approved of, but sometimes, a person has to do it for a good cause.

I think that it is normal and anyways, no one is perfect. Also, it could be because he is going through his teenage years, and during this time, many bad things seemed to be happening to him.

I think he gets himself into situations where he has to lie. I don't think he wants too. And usually it is to protect him or his family!

Hi bloggers -
All interesting entries on this thread! It's been very informative for me to hear your thoughts on this topic.
Many of you wrote, and I agree, that Matt usually lies to protect his family, or because he THINKS he's protecting his family. If you go through all the times he lies or tells a falsehood (as to Mrs. Stone about the condition of her husband's body), it usually falls into the category of protection of some sort.
BUT it's also true as some of you wrote that sometimes he lies just because "he's being a kid" or "everybody lies at some point" and even though Matt "seems good and respectful, he's not perfect." EXACTLY!! Matt's not perfect, and I didn't want him to be. Because who among us is? When Matt buys the candy instead of mailing the letter, that to me is a garden-variety kid lie, told to stay out of trouble for the time being. Those are the kinds of lies that always come back to bite you. I know they did when I was a kid and I know they do for my own kids!

I think Matt lies because he wants to please everyone, especially his mother. He keeps so much bottled up inside him that eventually he just explodes.

guerrilla season was the best book i have read in the school year this year
All kids lie because they do not want to get in trouble, but this does not make lieing right. Kids should never lie even if they know that tey are going to get in trouble if they tell the truth.

i think matt is i kid who gets board very easily and he is trying to entertain himself

I think Matt is being thoughtful most of the time when he lies. It's just like in chapters 20 and 21, what he says are not lies, just "good secrets" like the one he told to Mrs. Stone about Mr. Stone's corpse. He was saving her from horror.
